Company Description

Join Kelly Science and Clinical, where we connect passionate professionals with groundbreaking opportunities in the scientific community. We are representing an innovative, venture-backed biotech startup dedicated to tackling one of the most pressing challenges in therapeutic development : targeted delivery to difficult-to-reach tissues. This client, based in Thousand Oaks, California, is pioneering a modular platform to enhance the therapeutic index of biologics. They are committed to scientific rigour, creativity, and collaboration, seeking ambitious, inquisitive colleagues to help shape the next groundbreaking chapter in their journey.

Role Overview

We are looking for a meticulous and scientifically driven Mass Spectrometry Scientist to lead and execute the analytical characterization of our client’s diverse pipeline of bioconjugate and antibody / peptide / oligo-based therapeutics. This influential role will be pivotal in advancing their understanding of conjugation efficiency, in vivo pharmacokinetics, and molecular identity across multiple platforms. As part of your responsibilities, you will engage with external CROs and instrumentation partners to drive cutting-edge mass spectrometry analyses and in vivo pharmacokinetic quantification. Your expertise will also contribute to building robust internal mass spectrometry workflows as they enhance our on-site capabilities, offering you a rare opportunity to spearhead analytical development within a fast-paced, innovation-driven startup environment.

Responsibilities

  • Champion mass spectrometry-based quality control using top-down proteomics, focusing on intact mass confirmation and drug-to-antibody ratio (DAR) assessments.
  • Conduct and interpret bottom-up peptide mapping in partnership with chemists and protein engineers.
  • Collaborate with CROs in analyzing in vivo plasma and tissue samples, using LC-MS / MS to detect and quantify peptide or oligonucleotide species.
  • Develop and refine data processing and reporting pipelines to ensure analytical precision and reproducibility.
  • Act as a technical advocate, liaising with external mass spectrometry providers and CROs to ensure timely delivery, rigorous quality control, and coherent methodological alignment.
  • Drive the establishment of internal mass spectrometry capabilities—covering equipment selection, workflow design, and SOP development.
  • Work cross-functionally with teams in chemistry, biology, in vivo studies, and CMC to foster integrated data flow and informed decision-making.
  • Qualifications

    Required

  • A Master’s or Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related field.
  • 2-5 years of mass spectrometry experience, ideally within an industry setting focused on biologics, ADCs, or oligonucleotides.
  • Proven proficiency in LC-MS / MS, particularly in intact protein analysis, peptide mapping, and bioanalytical PK quantification. In-depth understanding of conjugation chemistry and its analytical implications.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage external CROs and mass spectrometry workflows within tight timelines.
  • Preferred

  • Expertise in oligonucleotide / peptide mass spectrometry or detection within plasma / tissue matrices.
  • Experience in bioconjugation, protein engineering, or organic synthesis.
  • Proficiency with data analysis tools like Xcalibur, MassLynx, Skyline, BioPharma Finder, or similar vendor-specific platforms.
  • Knowledge of early-stage CMC analytical needs, including assay qualification.
  • Understanding of bioanalytical regulatory standards, such as GLP-like expectations for non-GLP studies.
  • Ability to thrive in a startup environment with evolving infrastructure and substantial ownership expectations.
  • What Our Client Offers

  • Join a mission-driven team deeply rooted in scientific excellence and a culture of collaboration.
  • Competitive salary, equity options, and comprehensive benefits.
  • Work in a state-of-the-art R&D facility equipped for high-throughput discovery and translational biology.
  • Opportunity to ascend into a foundational leadership role as our analytical capabilities expand.
  • Why Join Us

Be a vital part of a trailblazing team where your contributions are valued and impactful. Embrace the opportunity to innovate in a collaborative and forward-thinking environment, advancing the future of treatment for neurological disorders.

    Application

If your qualifications align with the requirements of this role, we invite you to apply and take the next step in your career journey. Rest assured, even if this opportunity isn’t the perfect match, your profile will remain within our network, ensuring you\'re connected to a wealth of future opportunities in the field of science and clinical research.
