PRIMARY PURPOSE :
The Controller is a full-time exempt position reporting to the VP of Finance & Administration. This position is responsible for general ledger management, financial reporting, external audit preparation, and internal control assessment and improvement functions of the Business / Finance Services Office. It provides support for the members of the Business Office and ensures processes and procedures are in place to support effective internal controls.
CORE DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Responsible for preparation of financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Coordinate with the Executive Director of Accounting & Business Services on monthly, quarterly, and annual financial and accounting close processes.
- Plan and facilitate aspects of the annual audit, ensuring deadlines are met.
- Handle annual tax filings and ensure compliance with regulatory agencies.
- Maintain and review the accounting structure of the ERP.
- Reconcile accounts, research and resolve discrepancies, and ensure documentation for audits.
- Maintain bank relationships and oversee transactions like wire transfers and ACH.
- Oversee the general ledger for accuracy and completeness.
- Collect and format data for special projects and prepare financial reports as required.
- Stay informed about Banner updates, features, and system modifications.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on Banner Finance & AR modules, Transact, Destiny One, and third-party integrations.
- Collaborate with IT to implement new financial technologies and maintain system duties.
- Enhance reporting capabilities and resolve out-of-balance conditions.
- May lead and train other accounting staff and student workers, providing guidance and support.
REQUIRED SKILLS and EDUCATION :
Experience with accounting methods, including monthly financial and tax reporting.Thorough knowledge of accounting practices, auditing standards, and regulatory interpretation.Experience with integrated financial software, preferably Banner (Ellucian ERP).Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical skills.Excellent communication skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.Ability to supervise, lead, and develop staff.Customer service orientation and ability to work effectively in diverse environments.Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance, or related field.PREFERRED SKILLS and EXPERIENCE :
Over 5 years managing a business office, preferably in higher education or non-profit, including accounts payable, cashiering, banking, and supervision.Additional Details :
