Job Summary
Under the supervision of a Director of Mental Health Services (MHS), the MHS Clinical Supervisor provides clinical and administrative supervision to Therapists in the Mental Health Services department. They give Therapists information and feedback to enhance the Therapists’ ability to provide appropriate and client-specific therapeutic services and interventions. The MHS Clinical Supervisor reviews Therapists documentation to ensure accuracy and adherence to agency and Department of Mental Health standards.
Essential Functions
- Meet regularly with MHS Therapists for individual clinical and administrative supervision in order to review caseloads. Give clinical information and feedback to increase MHS Therapists’ ability to provide appropriate therapeutic services and interventions based on the needs of the clients and families.
- Provide weekly clinical group supervision for up to 8 therapists.
- Respond to Therapists as soon as possible when clients are in crisis situations; available during business hours and until therapists are no longer providing services.
- Actively attend, participate, and collaborate in team meetings / case conferences to support and provide guidance to MHS Therapists.
- Ensure that MHS Therapists meet minimum weekly agency service delivery expectation, submit progress notes within 24hours of services rendered and ensure that all other documentation is submitted within the agency timeframes / deadlines.
- Review all Therapist documentation to ensure that it is submitted accurately and according to Aviva, Department of Mental Health, and COA standards.
- Is LPS Designated to initiate legal holds for client’s inpatient psychiatric services / care.
- Attend all meetings as it relates to client care and / or therapeutic development as required by Aviva.
- Is sensitive and responsive to the cultural differences among the agency’s client population.
- Work to promote a trauma-informed work environment.
- Actively participate in a quality improvement project.
The MHS Clinical Supervisor will take on special projects or additional duties as assigned by the Director of Mental Health Services and / or AVP of Mental Health Services.

Competency Requirements
Must have a California BBS License for at least 2 yearsMust have experience clinically supervising others (i.e. graduate students, clinicians, case managers, paraprofessionals) for a minimum of 1 yearHave experience providing direct clinical servicesAbility to speak, read, write and understand EnglishAbility to work effectively as a member of treatment teamsAbility to accurately guide and support Therapist skills in assessing and diagnosingAbility to promptly and thoroughly analyze and respond to a crisis situation and support therapists and in appropriate client decision makingAbility to accurately and completely review, provide feedback and approve required paperwork in accordance with agency and County regulationsHave knowledge and supervise the principles and practices of community mental healthtreatment, including interviewing, assessment, individual, family and group counselingHave knowledge to guide access to general psychiatric emergency intervention protocolsMust demonstrate knowledge of principles of adult, adolescent and child psychologyMust demonstrate sound judgment, critical thinking and decision making skillsHave knowledge of the laws and regulations related to client’s rights, best practices, voluntary orinvoluntary inpatient treatmentHave knowledge and experience accessing community resourcesMust have excellent organizational, oral and written communication skillsMust have excellent time management skillsBilingual (Spanish) preferredEducation and Experience
Masters degree in Social Work or Psychology from a regionally accredited university requiredMeets Board of Behavioral Science criteria for providing clinical supervision to associates (ASW / AMFT / APPC)Experience providing clinical supervision requiredExperience with DMH documentation requiredKnowledge of DMH Evidenced Based Practices strongly preferredExperience with field based or outpatient mental health services strongly preferredCertifications / Licenses

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of a MHS Clinical Supervisor, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk, and use their fingers to manipulate a keyboard or writing instrument. The employee is occasionally required to drive and stand. The employee is rarely required to run, bend, kneel, reach or lift objects weighing more than 10 pounds.
Work Environment
The work environment is primarily indoors. The noise level varies from quiet to moderate.
