Our client, a late-stage and private biotechnology company in San Diego, is seeking a strategic and execution-oriented Chief Financial Officer to join its executive leadership team. This is a pivotal leadership role for a finance executive who can drive capital strategy, support a range of corporate development pathways, and build the infrastructure and discipline needed to scale into the next phase of growth. The ideal candidate brings a track record of success in the biotechnology space, including commercial-stage finance leadership, public market readiness, and transaction execution.
Job Responsibilities :
- Partner closely with the CEO and Board to shape the company’s financial strategy, including near- and long-term capitalization planning.
- Lead all aspects of the finance organization, including FP&A, accounting, treasury, tax, audit, and investor relations.
- Develop and maintain financial models that support strategic decision-making, capital planning, and resource allocation.
- Guide the company through key strategic events such as potential M&A, licensing transactions, crossover rounds, or an IPO.
- Oversee financial planning and reporting related to strategic partnerships, including royalty-based and milestone-driven licensing agreements.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with commercial, operations, and legal teams to ensure strong financial support for upcoming product launches.
- Build scalable, GAAP-compliant systems and processes that meet public company standards and enable financial transparency and discipline.
- Lead engagement with investors, bankers, and external stakeholders, representing the company in financing, partnership, and potential exit conversations.
- Support financial diligence and integration planning for potential transactions.
Education, Experience, Skills :
Bachelor’s degree required; CPA and / or MBA strongly preferred.Proven success as a CFO or senior finance executive in the biotech or specialty pharma sector, ideally in companies that have progressed from clinical to commercial stages.Demonstrated experience with M&A, strategic partnerships, and company sale processes; ability to lead or support successful exits.Experience preparing for or executing a public offering, with a strong understanding of crossover investor expectations and IPO-readiness.Strong command of royalty / licensing deal structures and related revenue forecasting and reporting.Operational leadership in building financial infrastructure for a growth-stage biotech, including FP&A, audit readiness, and ERP systems.Deep knowledge of GAAP, SEC reporting, and public company financial standards.Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments and present confidently to boards and external stakeholders.Seniority level
